MINUTES: Minutes from the meeting of May 12th were accepted

PRESENTATION: Tom Petranoff and Rich Destefano gave a presentation on clinics and practice sessions they are organizing in Connecticut for youth in the javelin. Rich asked for $600 to help cover the costs for his Summer Javelin Festival, which wound up over $1000 in the hole. The two will be holding practice sessions every other weekend at Yale. After a lot of discussion, Ray Lapinski moved that we officially endorse their program, and the motion passed unanimously. It was agreed by consensus to discuss Rich’s request for funding at next month’s budget meeting.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Mark Young reported that we currently have $3008.10 in the checking account and $15,093.21 in the Money Market.

MEMBERSHIP: Doug Black reported that we are about 650 memberships behind last year’s final total, with few if any expected in the next two months. The reason is that we have only 150 memberships that have come through national, as opposed to 900 last year. This is because the New York marathon dropped its membership requirement. So we actually increased the number of locally generated memberships. Considering the problems with the renewal mailing, this is pretty good. However, it will result in about $3000 less income.

Mark Young asked whether we felt runners SHOULD have to join USATF in order to run in the big marathons like Boston and New York. A lively discussion ensued, with no particular resolution. Ed Parrot discussed the new membership benefits package that will be mailed by the national office to all new members for 2000. It looks like a "go" and will include hundreds of dollars worth of discounts on track & field and running related items. The national office is also planning a new membership database, which is running into much resistance because it has not been planned out very well.

SECRETARY/SANCTIONS: Ed Parrot reported that we have just about the same number of sanctions as last year already. Our income may be up by as much as $1000 from last year.

ATHLETICS/YOUTH: Bill Mongovan reported that there were 283 kids at the Junior Olympic Track Meet. Peter Noble indicated that he was disappointed at the level of participation in this meet, compared with the buildup meets in Fairfield County. Bill indicated that next year, the meet will be on Saturday, to avoid Father’s Day. Doug suggested that more organizational meetings and dissemination of information are necessary. Junior Olympic cross country will be at Bethel on Nov 14^th, and the Region One meet will be in Van Cortland Park on Nov 21^st.

CONVENTION: It will be in Los Angeles and the room cost is $118

BUDGET: All area chairs should bring their proposals to the next meeting.

DISABLED: Bob Fontaine and Yvonne Grimes reported that the Special Olympics world games were somewhat shaky and suffered from a lack of officials, but was still relatively successful.
