USATF/CT Minutes: Sep 13, 2000

ATTENDANCE: Jim Barber, Doug Black, Rich Destefano, Bob Fontaine, Diana Gladden, Kevin Grant, Will Graustein, Yvonne Grimes, Peter Hawley, Ray Lapinski, Stanley Lord, Bill Mongovan, Ed Parrot, Maryanne Torellas, Dan Williams

MINUTES: Minutes from the meeting of May 10th were accepted

MEMBERSHIP: Doug Black reported that we have around 1375 members, a bit less than last year. There was a long discussion about spending money on someone to do membership. Both Doug and Ed will no longer be doing administrative work and they agreed to write up their job desriptions for the next meeting. There was no resolution regarding who will do membership.

ATHLETICS/YOUTH: Kevin Grant reported on the Eastern Region Track Meet on 7/9. It went well. he is interested in doing an officials clinic at Conn. College in January. There was also discussion over what to do about the three associations that didn't pay their fee: New England, Niagara, and Potomac. Danny and Kevin will try to come up with specifics about what to do about them for this year and next year, as well as coming up with some sort of late entry policy/fee to cut down on the problems we encountered this year with late registrations interfering with meet conduct.
Rich Destefano reported on the Javelin Festival. the total cost was about $6000. It was a great success, with an American record. Also, there is the possibility that some association sponsors will come out of it. We discussed the idea of charging a fee to non-USATf members next year. Bill Mongovan reported that the Nutmeg Games came off Ok, but did a poor job giving out medals. He also indicated that cross country junior olympics will be in Litchfield on 11/12.

X-COUNTRY: Will Graustein reported that the new cross country grand prix planning is going well. The first race will be on 10/14 in Waterford.

LDR: Ray Lapinski reported that there have been two AADP events recently, with two more cmoing up. Martha Merz represented CT at the Friehofer's 5K in June, and Alison Lapinski represented CT at the Parkersburg 13.1 last month. Coming up, Kate Schuler will represent CT at the Tufts 10K and there will be a men's AADP 10K as well. Also, there will be a regional half marathon on 9/24 - Ed Parrot is trying to organize teams.

OFFICIALS Bob Fontaine reported that it is a recertification year, so he is busy with that. On a national level, treatment of officials is a hot topic. Several bad examples at the Olympic Trials.

DISABLED: Yvonne Grimes reported that the ParaOlympic Trials at Conn College went well. The Special Olympic Distance running team ran the Hood to Coast race and beat over half the teams.

DEVELOPMENT: Rich Destefano reported that for 2001 he will likely add a fee to the Javelin Fest. He is also planning a fall/winter clinic at Trinity around the end of November. He is shooting for two winter/spring clinics, 1 in northern CT and 1 at Yale, as well as a spring javelin clinic.
